Here’s What You Missed at the ADU Fair for Homeowners!
On May 10, the ADU Resource Center of San Mateo County hosted its very first ADU Fair for Homeowners at the Belmont Community Center — and what a day it was! For homeowners just starting to explore the idea of building an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) or homeowners knee-deep in the planning process, this event offered something for everyone.
A One-Stop Shop for All Things ADU
The fair brought together nearly 30 vendors and organizations, including architects, contractors, lenders, designers, and ADU specialists — all under one roof. Homeowners got the chance to ask their burning questions and connect directly with the experts who can help bring their ADU dreams to life. They also had a chance to tour real life ADUs to get look and feel for the possibilities in front of them.

Expert Advice, Straight from the Source
We were thrilled to welcome three knowledgeable speakers to the stage:
- Ryan O’Connell of How To ADU
- Carrie Shores Diller of Inspired ADUs
- Meredith Munger of ADULoans.net
Each presenter shared valuable insights on the current ADU landscape. A few key takeaways:
- Flexibility is key. While building material costs have stabilized, supply chain hiccups still exist.
- 2025 brought big legal changes! It’s now easier than ever to legalize your ADU, and multifamily properties have even more options.
- Triple the potential. You can now build up to three ADUs on a single-family lot — including a detached unit (up to 800 sq. ft), a conversion of existing space, and a Junior ADU.
- Financing options abound. From HELOCs and second mortgages to renovation loans and even Home Equity Conversion Mortgages (HECMs), there’s a financial path for nearly every homeowner.

Building Community Around Building Homes
More than just an informational event, the ADU Fair was a place for connection. We loved seeing attendees swap stories, share plans, and walk away with real next steps — and a little more confidence — in their ADU journeys. Check out this story from NBC Bay Area, which covered the event.
Couldn’t make it this time? Don’t worry — we’re just getting started. Stay tuned for future events, webinars, and resources from the ADU Resource Center. And if you have questions, we’re always here to help you build smarter, faster, and more affordably.
